Viet Nam – NGOs have asked the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention for a ruling that prominent human rights lawyer Nguyễn Văn Đài is arbitrarily detained and to recommend his immediate release. The Complaint filed 25 November 2016, identifies and provides examples of Viet Nam’s abuse of Nguyen’s internationally protected rights to expression, association, participation in public affairs, liberty, freedom from arbitrary detention and all fair trial rights including access to counsel, notice of charges and pre-trial release. Nguyen has been detained incommunicado since being arrested on 16 December 2015 while enroute to meet with an EU delegation.
