The Social Justice Committee of Montreal reported that on March 13th, 2001 a crowd of people murdered Judge Hugo Martinez Perez after an unpopular ruling in a rape case.

LRWC wrote to urge that the murder be investigated, those who instigated the mob action be brought to justice, the government take all necessary steps to ensure that no other judge or lawyer in Guatemala is physically harmed due to the performance of his or her duties.
