LRWC is greatly concerned for the safety of Father Pedro Ruquoy.
I am writing, as a member of LRWC, in response to information received through Amnesty International. The information forwarded to us indicates that Father Pedro Ruquoy’s life has been threatened by the head of security of the Barahona sugar cane plantation. We are advised that the head of security is also an army colonel.
Father Pedro Ruquoy is entitled to the protection afforded by the Universal Declaration of Human Right and International Regional Pacts and covenants radified by the Dominican Republic. Article 1 of the Declaration of Human Rights defenders adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 8th, 1998 provides that “every person has the right, individually or collectively, to promote the protection and fulfillment of human rights and fundamental liberties at the National and International levels”.
LRWC calls for the immediate thorough investigation into the threats against Father Pedro Ruquoy and for the results obtained to be made public and for those responsible to be brought to justice. LRWC also calls upon the Government of the Dominican Republic to take swift and effective action to ensure the security of all human rights defenders so that they can continue to carry out their legitimate and important work defending human rights.
Please advise LRWC by mail, email or fax of the actions that the Government of the Dominican Republic is taking to:
1. Ensure the present and future safety of Father Pedro Ruquoy.
2. Investigate and take actions against the army colonel who has threatened the life of Father Pedro Ruquoy.
LRWC awaits your response. Thank you for your prompt attention to our concerns.
