Manuel de Jesús Barquí n Durán, Special Prosecutor for Guatemalan Public Prosecutors Office has been the target of death threats and an apparent assassination attempt. At the time of the threats and the attack Mr. Durán, was working on three cases that either involve allegations of misconduct by local officials or are considered otherwise politically sensitive.
On April 10th 2003, a number of unidentified men shot at his pick-up truck when he stopped at a petrol station in a city 125 km from the capital. Manuel de Jesus Barqui Duran was not injured since he had got out of the truck minutes before the attack, but his bodyguard was seriously wounded. Mr. Durán reported that he had received death threats for two weeks before the incident.
