SENG SARORN – Community leader and human rights defender

On 4 July 2007, Seng Saron was shot to death by an unknown person while at home. Mr. Saron was a human rights defender, community leader and member of the Culture and Environment Preservation Association. He actively encouraged people in his community to protest about forestry, fishing and land issues. He was recently involved in protests demanding that a company called Sal Sophea Pheanich return State forestry land to the community’s poor people. While police arrived on the scene of the murder immediately, an improper investigation led to the contamination of the crime scene. Sal Sophea Pheanich is reported to have interfered with the investigation.
