Obituary for Turkey Lawyer Ebru Timtik, died 27 August 2020
Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada joins lawyers around the world in mourning the death of Turkish lawyer Ms. Ebru Timtik on 27 August 2020 after 238 days of fasting to strengthen her demand for a fair trial for herself and hundreds of other Turkish lawyers detained for lawfully performing their roles as lawyers. LRWC offers condolences to Ebru Timtik’s family and colleagues and deplores the Turkish authorities’ arbitrary detention of Ms. Timtik and hundreds of other human rights lawyers and defenders, including lawyer Aytaç Ünsal, whose health has severely deteriorated after being on hunger strike for more than six months. On 2 September 2020, an obituary for Ebru Timtik was placed in two Turkish newspapers, BirGün and Yeni Yaşam, co-signed by a total of 139 bar association and lawyers’ organizations around the world, including Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada.

Deeply saddened we are by the loss of our colleague lawyer EBRU TIMTIK
She passed away on 27 August 2020 after a hunger strike of 238 days, which she started to strengthen her demand for fair trials and the administration of justice in Turkey. Her demands for justice were supported by many. We, the undersigned, lawyers organizations from all over the world would like to pay our condolences to her family, friends and colleagues with whom she worked on human rights issues and pay tribute to her determined work to protect the rights of others and promote respect for the rule of law.
Our fight to secure the release of her colleague Aytaç Ünsal continues.
